Carmen talks to Sam Hooper from The Apprentice Australia

The Apprentice journey still begins as the contestants settle back into their ‘normal’ lives, yeah right, as if it will ever be normal again! Especially for Morello - our first Australian Apprentice!

One of the all time favorite contestants, Sam Hooper, has certainly won the hearts and minds of Australia, at 19 years of age, this kid truly rocks! His emotional maturity surpasses his baby face and young age, he really stepped up to take on all the challenges with his heart and soul and did exceptionally well, I know he would have made his family proud.

I would like to introduce you to Sam Hooper and share with you some of his personal and aspirational  insights:

Who are your greatest Role model(s) and why?

I have always looked up to and been inspired by people who have succeeded thanks to hard work. From that, my greatest role models would be my parents Trudy and Craig who have always worked hard to successfully; run a finance business, run a household and raise my sister Emily and I. Nothing is ever to hard for them, and they have always supported me in all my endeavours, I am definitely a product of the environment I have been raised in.

What is the ultimate outcome for your career? what is it that you aspire to be?

Since I was a young boy I have always wanted to, and aspired to be a lawyer. Currently I am in second year law/commerce at university and working in a commercial team at a local adelaide law firm. The plan is to practice in the area of commercial litigation/Insolvency and work my way up through the ranks, if not in Adelaide, somewhere else in the world. Might even end up at the bench one day!  If all else fails I might try my hand at politics!

How has your experience on The Apprentice Australia shaped you moving forward? What were the lessons you took away with you?

The Apprentice has definitely given me a chance to stop, think and focus on the road ahead in my career. Giving me a lot more drive and determination to succeed. The biggest lesson I took away from the experience of The Apprentice Australia was definitely how to interact with different types of people of all ages, in particular different management and leadership styles. Being placed in a situation with 11 other competitive, like minded people definitely provided its own range of trials and tribulations, however at the end of the day I have walked away a much stronger person, and I definitely think I picked up a few tips and tricks along the way that I don’t even realise yet!

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

For me, completing high school in 2007 was a major milestone, now I just need to finish Uni which will hopefully be at the end of 2012. I was also very fortunate to secure a part time job at a law firm in my first year of university.

What are you reading right now?

Mick Gattos new book ‘I, Mick Gatto’

I trust you enjoyed my interview with Sam, he is certainly somebody to keep an eye on, this boy is going places!

More interviews from the contestants of The Apprentice Australia to come…

Ciao for now

Carmen talks to Lynton Pipkorn from The Apprentice Australia

My experience on The Apprentice Australia was absolutely phenomenal, I had the honor of meeting some of Australia’s brightest up and coming industry leaders. So I thought I would share some insight on some of these amazing contestants with you. Let me introduce you to Lynton Pipkorn:

biophoto3
Lynton Pipkorn - B.Comm (Hons)

For the last 10 years I’ve been working with brands in strategy, analytics and planning. I’ve worked for some great clients and agencies. I have even written the Australian Best Brands report in 2009 (read more here: http://tiny.cc/1WDPB). I believe I’ve been quite successful. I think the reason for that is I have a clear idea of what the role of a strategist is and that is to simplify things, then add value by making brands, brand experiences and communications more effective. I think that planning is about relevance, but also creativity, points of view and assertiveness in order to help people feel inspired and engaged by brands.

In the same way, deeply understanding the business of clients is something I excel at. What drives demand? How do they generate revenues? What’s their relationship with the trade? What is the role of brand in the purchase process? How do consumers make decisions in this category? What are their stakeholders’ values? Agencies so often preach that clients must take risks, but don’t understand what their clients’ businesses are built upon in the first place. Creativity must meet business reality if it is to hit the streets and the sell.

As a director of Internet social networking start up My Property Partner (http://www.mypropertypartner.com.au), I have also expanded my digital skills to help save brands from irrelevance.

Previously Associate Director at the world’s leading corporate brand and design consultancy Interbrand, Lynton now consults direct to business and agencies. Lynton has also lectured on brands at Monash University, spoken at numerous Intellectual Property and Marketing conferences and authored numerous papers on brands and brand management. Lynton has experience in various industries such as airlines, telecommunications, not-for-profit, financial services, the arts, property, FMCG, utilities, automotive and IT.

Who are your greatest role model(s) and why?

What gets me up in the morning is thinking about the great pioneers that have tread their own path in business and life. People like Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Ray Kroc, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. These people had that irrepressible spirit of entrepreneurship to challenge conventional wisdom and also took huge risks before they forged their success. They are truly inspirational leaders.

Locally I have huge admiration for people like Bill Moss from Macquarie Bank, John Singleton, Gerry Harvey, Frank Lowy and Andrew Forrest of Fortescue Metals.

What is the ultimate outcome for your career, what is that you aspire to be?

Ultimately I want to be able to have a diverse number of business interests, and to borrow from Robert Kiyosaki, ‘have money work for me instead of me working for money’. I have one under way called http://www.mypropertypartner.com.au)a new social network for property investors. I really love the challenge of starting up something new to meet a market need, and then making it work.

Still only 30, I want to continue working with businesses and helping them to become more insightful in the decisions they make to solve their brand and communications problems. I am very passionate about that, so besides building businesses, I also look forward to a long career working in advertising and communications ahead.

How has your experience on The Apprentice  Australia shaped you moving forward? What were the lessons you took away with you?

It was an amazing experience to be selected for the show and to actually work constructively with a random bunch of very committed but unbelievably diverse people on what proved to be some very tough challenges. I really thought that it was unrealistic that we would get the work done to any sort of standard when faced with these ridiculous time and task pressures. I actually discovered I was able to make some intuitive but tough decisions under pressure, and combine with my team to do whatever it takes to produce what I thought were some great results.

But the real outcome was being able to see yourself the way others see you. In the real world you don’t get that opportunity to self actualise like you do when know you are going to be on TV, so you really do become quite self aware and conscious of your image and how you are portraying yourself and your relationships with team mates that you actually don’t know very well. Would I do it again? Probably, but I now understand a lot more about the TV production businesses. Let me assure your readers that what the producers needed to make what they think is good TV is nothing like how the real business world operates!

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

A highlight for me was reaching Associate Director level at management consultancy Interbrand at 28, and going over to the United States to learn and train with from some of the best strategists and brightest thinkers from across the world in the company at the time, people such as strategy legend Leslie Butterfield and analytics practice head Greg Silverman.

Also analysing and writing about Australia’s leading business brands in producing the Australian Best Brands report was also clearly a huge highlight for me.

What are you reading right now?

I am very much into understanding people’s stories and how they got to attain their own levels of success, no matter in what area be it politics, entertainment, sport or business, so I love autobiographies and biographies. For fun right now I am reading a Biography on rock’ ‘n’ roll icon Iggy Pop by Paul Trynka, and when that is done I will start on Losing my virginity by Richard Branson. I am also reading the classic business book The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, which is the perfect book to be reading right now as we emerge from the global financial crisis.

I hope you have enjoyed getting to know a little more about Lynton Pipkorn, I will be interviewing other contestants from The Apprentice Australia over the next few weeks.

Carmen, The Apprentice and Super Leaders

Well it has been quite sometime since I sent out a blog, some of you may or may not be aware that I am one of the contestants on the Australian version of The Apprentice. Which took me off-site for around 2 months. An incredible journey of self-discovery to say the least! and having Mark Bouris as (The Don) was such an honor, this guy truly is one of Australia’s business success stories and in my opinion a fabulous role model for up and coming leaders.

One thing we can be sure of after the first episode is that I make the worst ever project manager! and the secret is out that I know nothing about gardening…so for those of you out there who continue to ask for quotes on gardening contracts…ahh who am I kidding…they are hilarious, keep them coming!

I was so impressed with some of the up and coming talent that I had the pleasure of meeting during the show, some really passionate Gen Y individuals that really impressed me, albeit at different levels. So I have decided that I will start to profile a couple of them via Super Leaders (through our newsletter, so make sure you have subscribed to it) to give you a further insight into their personalities, characteristics and business nous…

One of my favorite challenges aired on Monday night, the breakfast cereal challenge was just so much fun to do, who knew I could write lyrics for a jingle and come up with a melody!? this is what it was all about, putting you in situations outside of your comfort zone, testing your physical, emotional and psychological attributes..or should I say limits.

Make sure you tune in next Monday on Channel 9, at 9.30pm for the third episode..!

Opportunities in this financial climate

Well it has been a while since I have posted my blog, so much has happened and ‘unhappened’.  As a small business owner I am definitely feeling the cogs of corporate Australia grinding slowly and carefully as they rethink, restructure and redefine their business models in this economic downturn.  Of course the first people it will effect is the small business owners, which still fascinates me as large corporates are serviced by 80% of small business owners, so why aren’t they looking out for us?!

I was so disappointed to have to cancel the WOW (women of wisdom) luncheon this month as a major sponsor had to withdraw their support due to their budgets being cut, I guess this will be the world we live for a little while yet, it just means we have to do, think and plan differently as we move forward, I know I certainly do, but I have decided that I will do it with excitement at looking at new opportunities in and around my current business.  With every closed door another one opens, I am very open to the universal laws of attraction so I can’t wait to see where the year will lead me.

In saying that I also need to be mindful not to take too much on, you may or may not be aware that I suffered a minor stroke recently, a warning that I will not ignore!

I presented to the Monash MBA students and Alumni last Friday 8th May 2009, the topic was “conversations with CEO’s’ -   what a very groovy group of people, the staff were amazing the students were engaging and keen to keep discussing leadership styles and characteristics long after my keynote, I would have to say it truly made my weekend, still receiving emails of thanks and praise.  Those are the little things that you have to acknowledge and be grateful for in life, I am and I will continue to be.

I have been approached by a myriad of home based businesses opportunities to consider, it seems that this has become the new trend for people who have unfortunately lost their jobs, are looking for a new lifestyle, or just want to get out of the rat race all together!  In my next newsletter I will mention some that  I have come across that are worth considering, please also contribute any you have come across and perhaps we can build a list of options for those that might be interested in expanding their entrepreneurial endeavours.

Speaking of entrepreneurs, please have a listen to my podcast  interview with Janine Allis .

It is kind of exciting looking at the future right now, that we can consider new alternative ways of earning an income, that the traditional model is OK for some,  but no longer has the appeal it used to have for others, we are fast becoming an entrepreneurial society that is open to new ideas and ways of doing things.  More importantly that even now we still have choices, don’t get caught up on the negative attitudes of the press, this is the time you need to start thinking outside of your comfort zone!

I love this country we live in, still the land of opportunity!

Ciao for now

IWD - International Womens Day!

Today I was honored in attending the Victorian Honour Roll of Women for 2009 hosted by the Minister for Women’s Affairs - Maxine Morand MP.

As I sat there waiting for the ceremonies to begin I introduced myself to Jennifer Wills (who was prestegiously on last year’s  Victorian Honour Roll of Women list), lovely lady! we had a brief chat about women in business and both agreed that when women make it to the top of that ladder they have a responsibility to reach down and help other women climb those difficult rungs.

Maxine Morand MP quoted  that women were still being paid .84 cents in the dollar compared to their male counterparts…I have to say I was pissed off and surprised that in this day and age that gap exists between the genders.  Hello!  Australia we are in the 21st Century, move forward and take your place amongst us all, I appreciate that gender balance within corporate heirarchy will have its challenges, but can we please at least pay people equally for the same job and the same responsibilities!

The ceremony tonight was a fabulous tribute to women from diverse areas within our community. with women such as Jocelyn Bignold - providing invaluable support for women prisoners, Louise Cannon - Melbourne’s first female fire station Officer and Gwyneth (Gwen) Goedecke - increasing Women’s Participation in Decision-Making being acknowledged (amongst many others) on this prestigious list.

I felt truly humbled to be sitting there amongst such fabulous, selfless women and somewhere deep down inside I felt I should be doing more for the women in my community and made myself a promise that I would.

I hope I get invited next year and the year after that, thanks for whoever put me on the list and got me there tonight, I was truly inspired!

Stop Selling…..Start LISTENING!

Last week I sat opposite a business colleague who has been trying to hook with me since before christmas, we finally met for a coffee as he was keen to see how I was tracking and what he could do to assist in my business (supposedly….).

We were in the coffee shop for about an hour, 50 mins of this hour I spent listening to him talking about himself and his business, he got around to asking me about me and that took up about 4 mins and then the rest of the time left was all about him.

I wanted to shout out, JUST SHUT UP!  I was excited about his success but to have that be the key component of our discussion after his constant efforts in trying to have this moment with me was just a nightmare.  So I say to all of you out there who are ’selling’ an idea, your business, your services, your brand.  Take your sales hat off, put your big listening ears on and care, or pretend to care about the person you are pitching to, take your sales skills and review them and ensure that they are in line with the 21st Century!

Nobody wants to hear the long drawn out pitch of a used car salesperson!

Building long term sustainable relationships is the key to long term sustainable business, particularly through these challenging economic times.

The Year Ahead

The year has started off with great energy, despite last years disasterous end for some…yep even me. For some bed time reading, an article about yours truly,  here’s one in Wealth Creator:

Whilst the world faces economic doom and gloom Australian’s need to have a positive attitude at an individual level and support this fabulous country we live in by SPENDING MONEY!  Shopping works for me!

Having caught up with some business associates already this year it seems like Social Media is taking us by the ’short curlies’ into an era of new age marketing.  Definately a time to look for some tips on how to maximise on this new ‘no cost’ marketing initiative that even the global giants are now utilising to attract new talent, new ideas and more importantly brand themselves in a more efficient ROI kind of way.  The guru in this space in my experience, if you live in Australia, is PR Warrior, Trevor Young of ONE19  www.one19.com.au definately read his blogs for great tips and he can also help you with a great strategy so you dont profile and blog on every social media site….

One of my main objectives is to be more vigilant on key online business networking sites, my faves www.linkedin.com, www.twitter.com,  still not keen on facebook….happy for some more tips from my readers.

Happy Blogging All!

Bringing Sex back into the Workplace - Branding!

Executive Branding is like bringing ‘Sex into the Workplace’, walk into any meeting, networking event or interview as though you are in charge and you own the moment!  It is a corporate ‘turn on’.

The Power lies in what you DON’T say, it is all about your individual brand and the characteristics that set you apart from your peers and competitors.  You need to know what is working for you and what doesn’t work for you.

Live every moment like there is a camera on you and the world is watching.  This is clearly demonstrated by some of the worlds greatest leaders; Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Richard Branson, that charisma, that presence that catches your eye and your attention!

Super Leaders Launches in Melbourne & Sydney

What an amazing couple of weeks in the life of Super Leaders!

The Melbourne launch of the Super Leaders of Australia book was incredible.

We were fortunate to have a fabulous panel (pictured above) consisting of business commentator, Peter Switzer (facilitating); CEO of the Australian Institute of Management (Vic), Susan Heron; CEO of World Vision, Tim Costello; and CEO 3D Networks, Chris Luxford.

Peter, Susan, Tim and Chris spoke around the subject of ‘Leadership and Community’, and provided some great comments and insights on a subject that is critically important in today’s business environment.

Given the topic I have to say that Tim Costello was so inspiring, sharing his experiences and views on global poverty, with the upshot being we all need to do our bit, and YES, every contribution counts, no matter how big or small.

* Photo: Tim Costello shares a laugh with Peter Switzer

Sydney Launch

The Sydney launch event featured a panel (pictured below) comprising facilitator Michael Pascoe; CEO of the Sarina Russo Group, Sarina Russo; Pacific VP of Symantec, Craig Scroggie; and the CEO of Statewide, Frances Magill.

The panel covered the same topic as Melbourne, but with an interesting twist to the discussion around how corporate social responsibility (CSR) equates to impacting a positive bottom line. Discussion was lively, and a compelling business case was bought forward by the panellists.

We had a tonne of fun and made some great connections and opportunities moving forward. I am absolutely pumped at how well Super Leaders of Australia is being embraced by Australia’s corporate fraternity - it inspires me to keep looking for more interesting ways to make resources available to all of the up-and-coming Super leaders of Australia!

Women on Boards -1st National Diversity on Boards Conference

If any of the up-and-coming female leaders in Australia didn’t attend the Women on Boards  (WOB)- 1st National Diversity on Boards Conference this week, you missed out on an opportunity to meet and listen to Australias top female leaders share their insights, advice on how to prepare for a board appointment and their individual career journey.

The conference attracted people such as: Catherine Fox (deput editor AFRBOSS magazine), Margot Saville (journalist, TV presenter), Wendy McCarthy  AO…amongst many many others…

I ran two ‘personal branding’ workshops during the conference and felt really honored to be in the presence of such dynamic and powerful women in business. Ruth Medd (Chair WOB) & Claire Braund (Director-WOB) put together a unique conference that left delegates inspired, on fire and ready to rule the world!…or at least a board..

If you are working towards a board position and need guidance, advice and mentoring then you must check out Women on Boards  to make sure you get the latest news, trends and issues women face in todays corporate jungle.

NAB CEO - Work/Life Balance

There is an interesting article in the May issue of AFR BOSS magazine, where Ahmed Fahour - CEO - NAB - shares his insights on what ‘real’ leadership means to him and it hit some chords with me and the leadership messages Super Leaders is trying to represent: Valuing your personal life and being able to balance that with your career, social responsibility within your community, Ahmed is a great role model for up and coming leaders that really want to tap into true leadership styles and characteristics.

Hub for the Leadership Community

I am absolutely excited about our new Super Leaders website, a hub for people interested in leadership and a place where we can share stories and ideas about leadership, and give feedback on views etc.

We are in the process of producing a series of podcasts; as you may have noticed, we have kicked things off with two interviews with Peter Widdows (H.J. Heinz, Australia) and Chris Luxford (CEO, 3D Networks), who have opened up to share their leadership views within their own industry sectors, fabulous and honest stuff to listen to.

We are finalizing Christine Nixon’s (Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police) podcast as I write, so look out for that one, it rocks!

Having interviewed 50 of Australia’s top business leaders for the upcoming Super Leaders book, the underlying theme is set - it is all about being great people managers and appreciating that the contribution of individuals is key to an organisation’s success.

The Super Leaders book is due out in July, so stay tuned for news on that score.

I am really interested in any suggestions for topics or information around business, leadership or community that interests you the most so please feel free to contribute via this blog page.

Ciao for now and ‘happy blogging’

Welcome to the Super Leaders blog

My name is Carmen Parnos, CEO of Super Leaders of Australia and the Australian Coaching Academy.

The good news is work on the inaugural Super Leaders of Australia book has been completed and the finished art has (finally) been sent to the printer…phew! The coffee-table book will be released in Australia in July and showcases 50 of Australia’s most talented and inspiring business and community leaders.

Getting the book to this stage has been a big undertaking for our company but also a hugely gratifying experience for me personally, dealing with some of the best leaders in their respective fields.

To coincide with the launch of the book we will be running a series of Super Leaders networking events in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as a specially-developed leadership development program called Super Leaders Boot Camp.

For further information on the book, events and training programs, stay in touch with our website - www.superleaders.com.au.
